Frinton Golf Club teams in action
Article Published: Friday 21st May 2010 10:03:08 amThe past week has seen many of the Frinton Golf Club teams competing in a variety of competitions.
The Essex Seniors Team Championship saw Frinton play host to a team from Mardyke Valley Golf Club. Both golf clubs field a team of 11 players competing in singles matches. The Frinton team proved to be too strong for Mardyke Valley and helped by the familiarity of a home tie and a strong north easterly wind, they registered a comfortable eight games to three victory. Amongst the notable performances from Frinton were wins for team newcomers John Johnson and Allan Hickey. Frinton play Stableford Abbots in the second round.
The Frinton Golf Club ladies Bronze Team travelled to Channels Golf Club and found their opponents in good form. The Frinton ladies battled against the challenging course and a strong Channels Team but despite Jan Wright and Caroline Gard recording notable wins, the Frinton Team finally lost by five games to two.
In the Norman Plum trophy, Frinton had a resounding victory against Mardyke Valley Golf Club. The tie was played on both courses simultaneously and Frinton won both legs. In the away leg played at Mardyke Valley, Frinton won by two points; in the corresponding home tie Frinton romped home by than impressive margin of 22 points. Frinton now play Risebridge (near Romford) in the second round.
The annual Quadrangle match took place at Channels Golf Club where eight mixed pairs from Frinton competed against Chelmsford Golf Club, The Warren Golf Club and the home side from Channels Golf Club. As a result of two team members dropping out in the days preceding the event there was some re-shuffling of the team with Ed Glease and Brian Evans stepping in as worthy replacements. Home advantage paid dividend for the Channels team who finished ahead of The Warren with Frinton coming home a creditable third; Chelmsford occupied last place.
The Frinton Youth Shield team played away at Lexden Wood Golf Club and emerged victorious by three games to two in a very tight encounter.
On Monday, the Frinton Seniors entertained a very strong Purdis Heath (Ipswich) team and recorded a very creditable 4 - 4 draw. The seniors matches are always friendly and fun occasions and a chance to renew old golfing friendships sometimes stretching back many years. In the Purdis Heath team on Monday was Clive Bischoff who was Captain at Frinton in 1985.
