A lot of golf has taken place in a relatively short space of time at Frinton and the variety of events shows that there really was something for everyone.

On Good Friday, the Alfred Symes and Hamilton Scratch events took place as a concurrent single event – the Alfred Symes being a medal round where the best nett score triumphs, the Hamilton Scratch being decided on gross scores alone. Playing in a strong wind and using a combination of the white and the Championship tees represented a stern challenge for all of the entrants. Stuart Grimwade had an excellent round of 75 which earned him outright winner of both events; his nearest challenger in the Scratch competition was a highly respectable 78 from last year’s winner James Hide with James Taggart coming home third with 79.

Stuart Grimwade’s score of 75 – 5 – 70 narrowly won the nett competition ahead of the second placed score of 86 – 14 – 72 of Liam Wilson who beat the 85 – 13 – 72 of Mike Reynolds on countback. The leading scores from the Alfred Symes competition went on to contest the Filmer Bennett trophy in a matchplay knockout event culminating on Sunday morning with James Taggart defeating David Jones 1 up and thereby retaining the trophy he won in 2009.

Easter Saturday has traditionally been the date for the Frinton AGM and to add to the occasion a pre-AGM Texas Scramble took place. A full field enjoyed some changeable conditions; the winning team of Brian Foskew, Paul Marsh and James Hide returned an excellent nett score of 59.2.

Somewhat appropriately, Brian Foskew was subsequently installed at the AGM as the new Captain of Frinton Golf Club along with the new Lady Captain Lyn Lawrence. In a new twist to the annual Captain’s ‘drive in’, the outgoing Captains putted out on the 18th before handing the balls onto the new Captains to complete the ‘drive in’ ceremony.

Easter Monday saw a full field contest the Alan’s Putter foursomes stableford event. Malcolm King and Kevin Maleary scoring 37 points which was just enough to edge them past Michael Lockhart-Smith and Danny Leno, also on 37 points, on countback.
