Frinton wins Veterans' Inter Club Tournament
Article Published: Monday 13th July 2009 13:35:32 pmThe 2009 Veterans’ Inter Club tournament was held at Frinton Golf Club with eleven clubs drawn from the Essex and Sufflok regions of East Anglia contesting the Challenge Cup.
Each club provides nine golfers who play a stableford round; the team scores are then combined with the lowest score discarded leaving the best eight to count. In moderately windy conditions it was the clubs that play golf on links type courses who performed best and ultimately, home advantage for Frinton was handsomely rewarded. Frinton’s winning score of 257 points placed them just one point clear of second placed Felixstowe Ferry; the nearest challenge to the leading pair was from third placed Ipswich who finished some distance behind on 243. The domination of play by golfers more familiar with coastal golf conditions was also reflected in the individual scores with Terry Stapleton from Frinton (36 points) narrowly beating John Pearce from Felixstowe Ferry (36 points) on countback, with Brian Kemp, also from Felixstowe Ferry coming third.
The match was followed by a meal and prize giving which witnessed the Frinton non playing Captain, David Gager, presenting the Challenge Cup to Frinton Team Captain Terry Lawrence. This is the third time that Frinton has won the cup since the tournament’s inception in 1985.
The Frinton team was Terry Lawrence, Don Walker, Keith Banks, Terry Stapleton, Mike Reynolds, Paul Bishop, Charlie Dennis, Brian Young and Bill Smith.
