Captain's Day
Article Published: Monday 13th July 2009 13:15:26 pmFrinton Golf Club enjoyed a mix of sun, cloud and windy conditions for its Captain’s Day held on Sunday. This year’s Captain, Gus Rusbridge, had changed the format so that a fourball better ball stableford morning round was followed in the afternoon by a four man team Texas Scramble played over a cross country nine hole course that incorporated a par 6.
Whilst the excellent course conditions suggested that opportunities for good scoring existed, the blustery conditions led to numerous errant tee shots and consequently, many of the morning pairings came in with lower scores than they anticipated. The lower handicap golfers were better able to master the challenging conditions and it was no surprise that the two pairings tied for first place contained at least one ‘single figure’ golfer. In third place on 43 points were Tony Brooker and Bob Baggalley; second and first were only separated on countback, each pair having scored an impressive 44 points. Last year’s Captain Nigel Jackson playing with Gavin Cowell narrowly beating Owen Goldsmith and Richard Lewis for top honours.
The layout for the cross country course had been conceived by the Captain to represent a combination of stern challenges and good fun. Although some teams rose to the challenge better than others, everyone agreed upon the fun element of the event. The winning team was Phil Davies, Mike Redden, Martin Waters and Graham Harris.
